I had "the talk" with my dad and step mom tonight...
My dad and I often have discussions about politics and morals and such.
And tonight we got on the topic of gay marriage. Which my dad is against, fyi.
When I asked him his reasoning behind it, he said that it was wrong because “We’re biologically designed to reproduce. So having sex with someone of the same sex is going against your biological purpose”. I asked him, then if by that logic he also had an issue with people who decided not to have children, or women who were biologically unable to have children.
He said no, of course. And then my step mom said I was being extreme and taking his answer out of context.
Whatever.
Anyway, I asked him if I were gay, if he would support me. He said, “I would be disappointed, but I would support you”. Then he laughed and said, “But I’m not worried about that. You’re pretty boy-crazy”.
I sort of looked at him and my step-mom for a few seconds, then raised my eyebrows and said, “Really? Because, I like both”.
My dad didn’t know what to say. So I clarified a little, explaining, “I date men, but I’m attracted to women as well. But do you understand that it bothers me that if I fell in love with a woman, you wouldn’t want me to have equal rights?”.
I half-expected him to flip his shit. But he didn’t. He just kind of stood there, and said, “Well, that’s fine. I’m sure you’re going to go through so many changes in your life…”
Typical response, right? Grr.
I replied, “No, dad. Trust me. I’m not going through a phase. I’m not going to change my mind. I know this.”
We continued on with our conversation. He isn’t acting strange about it or anything, which is good. He went outside for a bit to do some things, and while he was gone my step mom came up to me and hugged me and said she was glad I said something (and that she suspected I was, not surprisingly).
SO. In conclusion, I suppose this all was a success.
I don’t think my dad will ever accept my bisexuality, but that’s okay. I have finally told him a secret I’ve been keeping for years, and damn…it feels so great.
