Revelations: Templar Awareness Question

PS3 version fyi.

Okay, so awareness goes up whenever you renovate shops/landmarks, do illegal things, take back dens, and recruit new assassins. That I'm aware of.

Anyone care to try and explain how my awareness went from <25% to max while I was idling over an hour?

By idling, I mean standing by a bank minding my own business, browsing Reddit while waiting for my bank vault to fill up.

The only things I can think of are Mediterranean defense missions I had sent recruits on or that awareness creeps up automatically unless you make it 0%.
