What the hell do i do?
Male, 24. 3 months ago, i broke up with my girlfriend of 6 years. It was one of the hardest things i have ever done.
She has always been more quiet and less outgoing than me, but it has always worked well. Her mother was really the only person in her family and she passed away 3 years ago, i was part of her support through this (her mother had a long battle with cancer). So for the last ~3 years of our relationship, i have been the closest person in her life. I have never had an issue with this, being that we thoroughly enjoyed every waking moment spent together. Trying to grow up and learn/try new things, but alas this is what has ultimately driven us apart. Her depression has increased greatly over the past year. I had to move out in an effort to keep us together (living together was no longer an option). I have found a concise set of goals to improve my life and start a career in a field that i am passionate about. My ex refuses to try to find a better job, or try college or any other sort of trade school to help her find something she actually enjoys doing. I guess what im saying is that i feel as though i am growing up, and she is not. I have clearly expressed these feelings and she has said that she wants to change-for herself-but has made no effort to do so.
So 3 months ago we broke up, and it has been incredibly hard on me. I still love her and hate to see her struggling to tread water. But i can not allow myself to be her crutch any longer, as i believe that my support is part of the problem. I feel like such an asshole, can't sleep. How do i move on?
