Why can't we use electronics on take off and landing?

I could understand if it was limited to items that transmitted and/or received. But every flight I've been on recently is quite anal in their rules of no electronics of any kind. Not even an old fashion gameboy or a kindle. I could read a book during take off and landing but I couldn't read a book on my e-reader.

Why is this? It makes no sense.
