Landlords & Tenants: Whats your horror story?
I recently posted on a thread where someone was asking about landlords doing credit checks.
This got me thinking.. Any landlords out there.. What are your horror stories with bad tennants? And vise versa.. Any bad landlord stories?
A couple years ago, I had a guy email me asking me to see the condo. Well spoken.. was renting it for his girlfriend.. So I decided to check out his name on facebook. It didn't come up, so I searched using his email address. A different spelling came up. I can't remember what it was that gave me a bunch of red flags but I decided to ignore the email. Approximately 2-3 months later there was a huge drug bust and guess who was the main guy who was charged? Same guy.. same unique spelling of his name and sure enough the picture matched the pics I saw on facebook. He was renting places around the city and was turning them into either drug houses or places for picking up.
I've had pretty good luck with my tenants so far. I guess the worst thing was in the middle of winter, (I live in canada, so it gets cold) The condo I rent out has water heating. The tenant had left the balcony door open and as a result the water line burst flooding the condo. Thankfully, I had all the proper insurance and the 9 months it took the insurance company to rebuild the unit - we were paid monthly by the insurance company for loss in revenue. The insurance company was a pain to deal with - not the tenant.
