Got my first bike. What are the essentials I should have on the road with me and some other random swellings.

The tall in short I found a bike that I fell in love with, could afford, and felt comfortable with. 1981 Yamaha XS850 in fantastic condition for its age.. I just want to change the battery. It's put down in a heated garage right now until somewhat better weather.

I feel like I should perhaps be worried. It's a heavy bike. Then again, I know my limits, have enough sense to have every skill redrilled in me after a 2-year break, and already own all the gear sans a decent helmet which I should be getting soon. For a month I have been eyeing the roads on my trips to places, picking out the safer/more comfortable ones.

I have thought of attaching engine guards -- all in all seemed like a good idea to me, even if it is to the detriment of the "original look" or whatever. The frame is strong enough to support it. Should I?

I should throw my tool kit in my bag for trips too. But do I really need it all? What's the bare minimum I could get away with (I like packing as lightly as possible).

Oh yeah, I'm a 20-year old female college student. I've been independent for two years now and that was the only affordable ride I can get to go places in the spring and to work in the summer, I'll be teaching. I am fully aware how this sounds.. Please share some wisdom/criticize me/say hi. I'd love all advice and input. :)
