Yet another "which method suits me" posts
Hey guys,
first of all: awesome subreddit. Subscribed a few days ago and felt like asking for some advice on quitting (again) since then. I'm sick of smoking and 01/01/12 sounds like a good date to remember. I'm aware that people ask for the right method on a daily basis. Downvote my ass into the twelth plane of torment if this is frowned upon here, but I'd love to see some advice based on my personal background.
Some background information:
-
Mid 20, smoker for something between 8 and 10 years (seriously, I can't remember).
-
Fulfilling relationship but pretty stressful job and an extremely irregular sleeping schedule. Financially okay, but quitting would help make some wishes come true.
-
Not really into sports (limited options due to an accident some years ago, although I'd really love to run), but basically in good shape. Gaining some weight wouldn't hurt.
-
I smoke between 20 and 30 cigarettes a day. (Same for my girl, but for some reason she doesn't seem to have a problem with quitting from one second to the other.)
What I have tried so far:
-
Cold turkey for a gazillion times.
-
Allen Carr and countless other books/DVDs.
-
Bubble gums, chewing on toothpicks, all kinds of supplements like that.
-
Nicorette Inhaler.
-
E-Cigarette.
The latter being my last attempt. All of them failed in stressful situations (sharp deadlines, friends/family members' deaths, relationship issues, etc.), but - without being pessimistic - there are more and more to come and I don't feel like they are an excuse.
I do know that I am the single dumbest person on earth for still smoking, but I have one problem with that thought: On the one hand, I tend to forget/ignore this fact if I don't look in the mirror and start to insult my past-self every single day; on the other hand, I don't feel like really having quit when I do so. It just doesn't feel non-smokery if I have to remind myself that I was/am an idiot all the time. I'm aware that I wouldn't actually give up anything but gain a lot - still I smoke in this very moment. Someone should really punch me in the face right now.
My "best" attempt was with the E-Cig, but I to be honest, I don't want to smoke something else instead, I want to get rid of it for good. Haven't tried nicotine patches yet, but I'm also afraid to do so. I'd be willing to give it a try just for the sake of kicking the habit of smoking itself first and nicotine addiction afterwards, but I' actually never had the feeling it was the pysical addiction that was my problem (although, everytime I tried to quit I constantly felt like I needed to yawn but it wouldn't help - is this the nicotine? I always told myself it was my lungs healing).
So, any suggestions how to make it count this time?
Thanks in advance for every piece of advice and sorry for the occasional bad english, tipsy non-native speaker at 6 AM here.
