Should I follow my dreams or stay practical?

I've seen a lot of posts of adults giving advice to teenagers. Being a teenager, I find these very interesting. However, there are always multiple posts near the top saying to pick a good career and stick with it, and many posts near the top saying to follow your dreams. Can we get a discussion on this singular topic?
