I want to buy a domain and set up my own website and email. How do I go about it?

Can anybody point me to some good guides for this sort of thing?

I've heard I can use Google for my email somehow, so that would be nice since I use Gmail anyway.

What about the website? Any thoughts on that? Wordpress is apparently free and easy enough to do for what I want.

Any advice or thoughts welcome.
