Not sure where to begin

I need to learn how to program for a Business Intelligence grad program I want to get into about a year from now. The program requires some programming knowledge although it doesn't have to be extensive. I will be working with databases and data analysis. Ideally, I want to get into Web analysis.

So where should I start? Which language? SQL? I have web hosting so I was wondering about messing around with PHP and MySQL. I have some experience with both but not much.

What do you recommend for someone who needs to learn to program for databases? Any particular books?

Thank you!
