Here's how I finally got a job after 6 months of being unemployed with a bachelor's degree. (It's just like dating)
Admittedly I was a bit picky about what industry I wanted (only wanted a smart/funny/attractive girl), but here goes, for anyone curious. This process took 6 months, and the entire time I did not get a SINGLE interview for an entry level position in my field of interest, but the job I ended up getting was a mid-level position.
Two months prior: dinkin around, applying to jobs, not getting any interviews. (just like hitting on random girls at clubs and not getting anywhere)
-
- Started volunteering at an organization that did what I was interested in, doing every single thing they asked of me and getting people to like me. (making friends with the target girl's friends)
-
- Around the same time I began a relevant certificate course at the same university I got my B.S. (analagous to going to the gym)
-
- While volunteering, I asked my supervisors if they knew anyone who would let me volunteer in what I was interested in (asking friends to set me up with blind dates). This was a slow process and a lot of things fell through or turned out to just be discussions with people, one of which was over coffee with someone who had a job I wanted. After we had coffee, she invited me upstairs to see her offices and meet her coworkers (go back to her place, kiss a bit, get the roommates approval)
-
- Two months later, the person I had coffee with got a new job. She recommended me to her manager as a replacement, and he contacted me for an interview. I had lots of references with that organization already, and I had one of them actually email the manager directly to talk about me. My references said wonderful things and I had already met most of the people I'd be working with.

- I just got hirrreeddd and it feeeeellt so gooood!

Most important point: network like crazy, don't use people, work hard, and eventually you'll be in the right place at the right time.
