Is Cis/Trans* a binary?

I just read a huge long discussion (read: argument) between two people I respect with opposing positions. I suppose I feel like I just almost lean toward it being a binary, which is disturbing. How does creating two opposing camps promote equality?

On the other hand, I see the Cis side of the binary as representing hegemony and patriarchy, and creating a binary between "cis" and Trans* isn't problematic to me. Then, on the other hand, that explanation alienates true cissexuals.

So it's a wash. Neither for it nor against it at this point. What do you think? Is Cis/Trans* a binary?
