Out of practice poet with some short story experience looking to write a novel.

I was hoping that someone might point me in a direction of reference material on how to plan and layout material for writing a novel. Obviously the best place for examples is just to read as much as possible, I already do that, but starting a novel is quite daunting and it would be nice for some extra guidance.
