What is the cause of the powerful pain response when a person's eyeball is exposed to ejaculate?

I've heard many accounts of people getting semen in their eyes and it causing a lot of discomfort. I know that our eyes can be very sensitive but from what I understand this causes a lot more pain than something like getting an eyelash caught under your eye lid. Is semen particularly acidic? Does it have anything to do with salt content?
