What is the difference between canon and fanon Luna?

I occasionally stumble across some post or comment (usually on Ponychan) that mentions how the canon and fanon versions of Luna are different.

As I've not yet read many fanfics, where would be a good place to read up on some Luna fics? And how does the fan view of her differ so much from what we've seen on the show itself?
