What would I have to say to get this kid to his breaking point?

My friend is a....I guess you could say Catholic. He was abused to a good degree when he was little and absolutely none of it was his fault. I've probably had more then 50 full discussions with him about it and tells me he really started believing in god when he was being abused. Alright, I can see where he has a point there because he felt he had nothing left to turn to but that. But he has to be one of the most knowledgeable kids I've ever met. Hard worker, knows anything about history you could imagine....but he's religious. Now I'm a full blown atheist, not because I hate religion but because I felt that one day that I'm responsible for my own actions and I'm a very "It needs to be seen or I don't believe you" kind of person. I KNOW that he's so close to being an atheist because he really is a smart kid. His big quote is "I got myself through everything that happened to me and I've never been in jail like most kids that went through it would." I just don't get how he can contradict himself so much by saying that and the next second saying "I prayed everyday that it would stop one day, and god finally answered my prayers". He's told me to try and tell him something to disprove his beliefs, like any christian would. I know that if I can come up with the right things to say that hit a nerve with him, he'll stop believing in a second. I'm not doing this to bring him to my side either, I just know that it would be best for him to feel like he's stronger then he believes himself to be. With that said, what would you suggest I say to him to help bring this along?
