Ancient History

And to think that I
Could carve a penis into a concrete wall,
And in 10,000 years it would be the
Archaelogical find of a lifetime.
Or I could carve
"I love you"
Into my arms everyday for the rest of my life
And the message,
Everything I stand for,
Would be gone by the end of a century.
I would scream it from the rooftops,
But the echoes would only last
A second at the most.
I could paint you a picture,
But in three hundred years,
It would be hanging in some
Musty old art hall,
Or some old womans dank basement,
While you spent every night
Longing to break free.
So maybe, if love really is forever,
Instead of spending our afternoons in the park
Under the trees,
We should burn down buildings and
Spray paint our silhouettes on the ashes,
Insted of sonnets, consider sacrilege.
Or maybe, we don't need to last forever,
The Picassos and the Eschers have made their mark,
Who says we need to make ours?
Let the mice and men build their museums,
We will watch the lotus bloom,
And slowly wither
Away.
I could carve your name into a concrete wall,
And in 10,000 years, it will never mean as much
As your hand in mine.
