How do you obtain post ER treatment for a semi-serious knee injury with no health insurance?

Last week I took a fall and wrenched my knee. Something popped and moved inside, and popped back. I went to the ER and got xrays, but since no bones were broken there wasn't much they could do. I got a diagnosis of possible meniscus tear, with a referral to an orthopedist. I told the doctor that I didn't have health insurance, but he basically told me I have to go see an orthopedist. I have a low-paying job, no familial support, and no car, so I cycle to work as my main form of transportation. I have no idea what to do. There is just no way I have money to see a specialist, and even if I had enough for that, there's no way I could afford any of the treatments. I've tried calling the local health department, but because I'm not an unemployed single mom, I don't qualify for any programs. I really need to figure out a way to get this treated, or to get over it quickly. Any advice is appreciated. I can barely walk, and it hurts. A lot.
