How I think FA can be constructive...and how it can be destructive
I'd like to say this is a fantastic subreddit and it's nice we all have a place to come and vent our frustrations rooted in loneliness. Misery loves company, after all.
And there's something to be said about the comics people post to illustrate real-life examples of how they get dumped on or ignored. They resonate with many of us and help fortify the community.
However, what concerns me is we might get a little too comfortable in this community.
It might be that this may be the only community where we don't feel like outsiders, that we sort of hide here among our shy members. The phrase "Forever Alone" might be a catalyst. The word "forever" implies that it never ends, that we are destined to be alone and unloved for as long as we live.
We feel even more stuck here because, not only is this the one subreddit where we feel the least ostracized and the most welcome, the fact is Reddit tends to be addictive in general. One might either hope someone else makes a meme comic detailing that one moment that left that person feeling miserable for a week a few years ago or look for one that details a situation one can at least understand and appreciate.
However, any serious problem, like quitting smoking or drinking or gambling, starts with the sufferer wanting to get better. This is where the community can be beneficial. After all, no matter what, one only has so much grief in which to wallow. After a while, a person gets sick and tired of being sick and tired.
So, I think after a while of commiserating with fellow FAers, we should come up with a plan to improve our lives and do something about that "forever" bit.
