New Years Resolution

If you have not made one yet, then consider this:

This year, more than any other, I have learned who my real friends are and who is not. Someone I have known for seven years, suddenly turned on me and everything I stood for. It came out of nowhere. My freshman year at college (2006-2007) I listened to his every word about how his girlfriend at the time cheated on him with several other guys. And I listened to him because no one else would.

Now, in the summer of 2011, as I sat down to a friendly dinner with him and two other friends, he began a rant that unraveled our friendship. He insulted my brother for being 26 and not having a full time job, even though I said he (my brother) was in school full-time and raising his three year-old son on weekends. That didn’t matter. My “friend” then continued to insult my brother and the rest of my family. I didn’t make any effort to contact him for months. I didn’t even let him know I was returning to my hometown for Christmas, whereas in years past he would’ve been one of the first to know.

He apologized one night while I was home, saying he was drunk and didn’t recall what he said at that dinner. “Drunk words are sober thoughts” I said to him. “I didn’t mean any of it,” he said. I accepted, thinking he actually valued our friendship over his ego.

Days later, his room mate (who I haven’t talked to in a while, I assumed he too was an asshole) texted me, “Don’t let **** get “drunk” on Dr. Pepper. He might get mad.”

I found out the next night that my friend had lied to me. He was completely sober when he went on his rant, and meant every word. Tonight, I defriended him on facebook, but left him on my phone, in case he ever contacts me again so I will ignore it.

The point is, just because someone is there for a long time doesn’t mean they have your back. Don’t keep people in your life that don’t care for you and support what you do/ aspire to do. Keep those who actually love you close. Keep your foes at bay.

What is your new years resolution, if you have one?
