Honorable Congressman Paul Ryan:

I am very alarmed at the current news circulating about H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill and the threat to innovation because of it. This bill acts to censor the American internet and will stifle innovation.

This is alarming for the following reasons:

1. SOPA would irrationally make websites police for illegal copyright content uploaded by any user, making it difficult if not impossible for companies like YouTube and Facebook to operate;

2. The Conservative and Liberal blogospheres have been very vocal against SOPA and major corporate businesses are listening. Simply having a link would cause a website to be guilty of piracy by association, which both internet users and internet corporations are against. The recent backlash at GoDaddy.com shows that Americans are united against SOPA;

3. With our economy in dire straights, our focus should be on job creation. This legislation will cripple new Start Ups because it allows corporations sue any website they feel aren't doing a good enough job filtering content;

4. Copy infringement and online piracy are important issues, but they should not be fought by smashing innovation and forcing companies to waste funds policing content rather than developing new tools.

As a U.S. citizen, I expected a much higher level of service from you and other elected officials that are empowered to legislate for the benefit of America, and I am quite disappointed.

I question the standards and research used to draft this bill. I implore you to look at the consequences of supporting H.R. 3261 and redact your support from the bill immediately. Your response will have direct implications for my political and monetary support for this congressional seat.

Sincerely,
