iPad Requests Every Google TLD Address Variant

Just wondering if anyone else has ever noticed/experienced this. I was just checking my logs and saw a random spike of about 800 domain requets to every conceivable TLD of Google. This happened very quickly, under 30 seconds but it's just a string of every www.google.XXXX and maps.google.XXXX, where "XXXX" is everything from ".as" to ".vu". I've never seen this before and just wondered what the logic of such an exhaustive domain query could be.
