Help needed! 1.2 vs 1.6, Allure vs GT Line

I'm in the process to buy a second hand 5008 and I need some help from current 5008 owners. I have a pretty clear idea about petrol and automatic (EAT8) but I need some help about the engine size and trim level.

I'm not planning to do many miles per year (historically I've done around 10K), hence the choice of the petrol. The majority of the year the car will be used in Cambridge with occasional weekend trips and also some occasional travels to Europe (Italy) with 2 adults and 3 kids. I'm not a car person but ultimately I don't want to buy a car which will struggle hence having a shorter lifespan.
The first question: is the 1.2 enough or is it better to go to 1.6?

The second question is about trim levels: I did a test drive the an Allure one and I was amazed by this trim line. Then I looked at the GT line and it seems the car has all this small upgrades (LED headlights, internal lights, back window blind, wireless charging, etc...) which make the car very attractive.
In terms of cost/value of the car, is it worth to pay the extra of the GT line?

Thanks for your help and I really look forward to buy this great car!

Cheers

Will you use any of the small upgrades in the GT Line trim level? Does your phone support wireless charging? Do the three kids like sleeping in the car? LED headlights are a game changer when it comes to night time driving in my opinion.

Regarding engine size, drive both, they will feel different. Personal opinion? As the saying goes, "there's no replacement for displacement", I feel 1.2 engines are overworked and over tuned to churn out as much HP as possible, giving them worse reliability in the long run. Since you wont be drivig much, the savings between one engine and the other are negligible. Plus 130HP in a vehicule that size vs 180HP...

I am not a professional in any way, drive both and see what you prefer.

Hello, thanks for your comment.

It's a yes to all your questions :)

Regarding the engine. I did try the 1.2 and I was happy about it, so I guess the 1.6 will be better.

TBH I had to google the sentence "there's no replacement for displacement" :)

I guess your considerations are all valid, thanks for opinion!

It's an old saying people use to critisize smaller engines regarding the engines displacement(1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, etc), I dont believe in it 100% but I do consider more reliable a 1.6 over a 1.2 due to the strain put on a motor to churn out that much HP in such a large car. In real life terms, whats better? 1 horse pulling a carriage or two horses pulling the same carriage in the long run?

If you'll use all the extras and can afford it, go for, I know I would.

Try the 1.6 and enjoy the difference.

Please let us know what you end up with.

Thanks for the r/explainlikeimfive explanation! As I said, I'm not a car person so such explanation are very welcome :)

I will give a try with the 1.6 and let you know.

Thanks

Depends the cost difference. Spread it out over the lifetime you expect to use the car and decide if it's worth it.

Yep, will do!

if you travel once in a while big distances whats the point to get an engine which will have more consumption all over the year for your daily drive. From the other hand the 1.6 will not struggle as much as 1.2 because the 5008 its a heavy car and with your family the weight is much more. it depends and from the different of the price. generaly if i was in your position 1.6 my opinion, the allure or gt line is a clear decision if you are willing to pay more for your car and its more attractive

I have made similar considerations. At the end the annual mileage I will do is not the much anyway hence the economical impact is not that big in terms of petrol. With the bigger car, we might do longer trips within the UK, so potentially a 1.6 is a better choice. Thanks for replying!
