For those encountering the black screen issue, here are things I've tested to rule them out

SpoilerBugs - Rift Apart
  • It is not ray tracing or any graphics mode. I have tried all 3 and gotten black screens

  • It is not a matter of factory resetting your ps5, or rebuilding database. I did the latter first to no avail. Then factory reset and it went a little longer without crashing the first time I played, now it's back to every 20-30 mins before a crash

  • It is not tied to your ps5 "overheating" mine is out in the open and I have the A/C on

  • It is not related to updates. 1.000.2 or whatever crashed just as much as the latest version

  • It is not tied to disc vs digital, unless people are lying. I've seen claims digital version has this issue too

  • It is not tied to where your power cable is plugged in. Crashes equally for me in a surge protector vs the wall

  • Turning off 120hz in the PS5 menus didn't fully prevent it either, although I seemed to be able to go through all of world 4 and most of world 5 once I turned it off (it shut off for me while grinding the rails in world 5). Maybe just coincidence

I think I've read enough to confirm that it's a software issue and not a hardware one. Way too many people are having this issue. From what I've gathered, people generally are complaining about 5 games in total doing this (R&C, Subnautica, CoD, FF7 and Miles Morales). I played through Subnautica and MM without a single issue. I've had this issue happen to me in Destiny, but only once or twice in all my time playing. R&C it would happen every 15-30 mins without fail. Seems to be an issue with PS5 games specifically, never had this happen on a PS4 game.

Same my digital has it too. You sir are smart just like me, I have determined it is a software issue. People say that it can be my PS5, but imo that is impossible. I have beaten and/or platinumed the following games on my PS5 all with no crashes: Astro’s Playroom (100% Platinum), Ghost of Tsushima (in 60fps 100% Platinum), Miles Morales (100% Platinum in Performance RT Mode), The Last of Us Part 2 (Completed Main Story in 60fps), Shadow of Mordor (100% Platinum), Ratchet & Clank 2016 (100% Platinum), Mortal Kombat 11 PS5 Version (100% Platinum), etc. I think you get my drift. As you can probably tell I have put loads of hours into my console, and I have played all of these games and have not had a single crash in any of them. It was not until I downloaded Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart when I had my first hard crash on the system. Prior to this game’s release my console has been running perfectly fine. Another way to tell this is a software issue is there are plenty of people who claim to have had no crashes in the game, but then after downloading the latest patch, they now are crashing. This right here is a big indicator that this is a clear software issue. In my case though, my game always crashes even after the last two patches. I have the digital edition and to even test it further, my friend who lives about 5 mins from me also downloaded the game on his digital PS5 (through gameshare) with the latest patch and he crashed upon his first death in the Nefarious Juggernaut battle. His console also never had any crashes at all, until he played Rift Apart.

It's 100% a time spent in game thing. Every 15 minutes or so I would go back to the main menu and then dashboard, and reboot the game. Managed to play this way for 4 hours without a single blackout. If I didn't do this, and kept going, eventually it will blackout without fail.

Question is what triggers it. There's no rhyme or reason. Cutscenes that it would happen in the middle of randomly, I would reboot and watch those same cutscenes no problem. It has to be some kind of timer checking for something and it not registering properly causing the blackout.

It's undeniably a software issue

Hey mate! Long time no see, just stopping by to confirm that the latest patch patch 1.002.000 has completely fixed my game! Just goes to show what we thought was true, it definitely was a software issue. Before my system would crash almost every 15-30 minutes making the game unplayable. Now ever since yesterday’s update, my console has been running it fine! I have been playing the game for about 5 hours in total today and not a single crash. It is almost polarizing considering that the game must have crashed on me at least 10 times before. Just goes to show for future reference that yes - software exploits and bugs can affect the hardware negatively despite the console being perfectly fine.

Nice. I also had it happen to me in Destiny 2 twice during two different raids two days apart, so I think partially it has to do with overheating as well. The R&C is most likely just software though.

I did notice when standing vertical, the vents on the bottom are completely covered and my console got really hot (to the point of the "screw" on the base becoming VERY hot). I took it off and put it horizontal and as ugly as it is, it definitely feels a little cooler at times. Who knows.

But yeah I'm with you, R&C was software

Hey man! I know this is an old post but I'm just wondering: Have you played r&c since the latest patch? Or since you repositioned your console? I just bought the game (physically) and copied and updated just fine. But I run into this blackscreen issue whenever i die, so it seems that the update didnt fix it universally. I was looking up a fix and ran across your post lol. It's annoying that i havent seen insomniac address it yet

True! I have done the same thing! Checking to see if there are any consistencies with the crashing, but there are not any in my scenario. The game crashes at various times. Even just now I downloaded the brand new patch, uninstalled and reinstalled the game, cleared the system software cache and rebuilt the database. I also deleted my save and restarted the game (just to see if anything would change at all). All of a sudden I am playing the beginning of the game and I beat Dr. Nefarious and I am going through the purple rift (the one before you are greeted by the title screen). When you land on that pirate ship before rifting again, my system just crashed lmao. And I have never crashed on that part before. In all my other attempts at playing the game, I always at least got past the title screen perfectly fine until now. I am just going to leave the game here until it gets more patches. I shall begin platinuming Spider-Man 2018 Remastered I guess to occupy myself. Haha I find it funny that I can play the other two Spidey PS5 games (both developed by Insomniac) in 60fps upscaled to 4K with ray tracing with no issues yet running Ratchet without ray tracing just rekts my console lmao. Patience is best I guess.

So it’s hard to find info these days, has this been fixed? I had really bad hard black screen crashes back when the game first released to the point where I had other games crashing and had to fully factory reset my PS5 to fix it. Deleted the game and my save and haven’t touched it since. PS5 been running fine for months. I really really want to play the game but I’m still afraid.
