Going underappreciated

Discussion

When I'm the healer:

50% of team damage healed, 10 clutch heal, 0 deaths, mvp: 0 votes
Random dude hitting the nexus twice: 3 votes

When I'm not the healer:

Top siege damage, top hero damage, top xp, top kills, 1 death, getting camps, always showing up at objective: 0 votes
Random healer who sometimes healed: 3 votes

Almost every match is like that.

I don't get it. It's like people just don't want to vote for me because of reasons. I'm a healer main, but rarely do I get even 1 vote after matches. A few matches without votes would be fine, but almost all? And I'm not a bad healer, I saved people from tight situations and sometimes I changed the tide of the fight with a good utility. Even if the enemy has 4 of the top 5 in the after-match screen, the 5th is usually me.

Or take this one recent match for example: we were gaining ground steadily. We won every teamfight, although they were long. Then in one teamfight I overextended and died. Team got instantly wiped, and then the enemy moved into our base, and it was over. Just because I died once (It was way after lvl 20).

Zero votes after match. Not even a thanks. Nothing. Same happens after won matches. Sometimes the enemy healer gets all the credit, while I get none.

(Disclaimer: I'm not toxic at all. I rarely chat, but if someone's friendly, I try to reciprocate. If someone's being a cunt, I just report and mute. Very rarely do I say something sarcastic in chat, maybe 1 out of 10 matches. I don't overuse ping either, mostly just signalling where am I going, when should people retreat or signal that it's time for taking a camp.)

Game mode doesn't matter, same happens in ARAM, QM and in Ranked. What am I missing?

I acknowledge the fact that maybe it's a petty thing to get frustrated over, but I'd really like some acknowledgement that I served the team well. That's like half the fun: knowing that the team appreciates my efforts and I could make them proud by being a good teammate.

Are you seriously butt hurt over not getting enough votes on the mvp screen ?

Yes.

Just gotta not let it get to your head. It's often true that many players can't tell good or bad play apart well by seeing, so they vote for different kinds of things.

I have noticed (I'm a healer main too) that I'm more likely to get votes for flashy plays, so when I play Anduin and get cool pulls and Lightbombs, or when I play my Alex/Whitemane/Ana all of whom are hard, then I get more votes.

6
nulloidOPPerfection goal that changes.•

It all makes sense (I mostly play Brightwing, and I think it's harder with her to make a good flashy move), it's just that it started happening this season really - at least I don't remember this being a thing in the past.

Or maybe I'm just getting older. Thanks for the explanation, though.

It could be that you think you are playing better then you actually are and other people's opinions show that throughout voting system

6
nulloidOPPerfection goal that changes.•

That could be of course. I could only go by statistics and a few anecdotal matches.

Not even a thanks

HAHAHAHA you seriously expect people to thank you for playing the game?

Even if the enemy has 4 of the top 5 in the after-match screen, the 5th is usually me.

Edit: That says nothing the MVP screen is pretty random.

5
nulloidOPPerfection goal that changes.•

I read it in Alarak's voice.

As for expecting thanks... I see that other players get upvoted to the high heavens constantly (there are a few matches where there are not many votes cast), and it really looks unfair. What have they doen that I haven't?

It's not like I expect it, but if it's there, it would feel good to have it at least sometimes.

1
Solide_Schlange1#Lucio EU.:rip::hgc:•

Well, "not even a thanks" implied to me that it is some kind of minimum that you expect from others when playing.

But from seeing what kind of things you use for measuring your performance I’m very sure that you just play way worse than you think you do.

1
nulloidOPPerfection goal that changes.•

Ah yes, probably a bad phrasing on my part.

What would be good measures wrt. gameplay performance?

1
tensaixpMaster Tracer•

None on the stat screen. Since you play BW, go watch your own replay. Now see how many times can you poly to prevent an engage, like a diablo charge, imperius spear, etc. See how many times you could have prevented it, vs how many times you actually did. Same thing with Z, how many times did you recognise the focus and Z in time, and your E, how many times you E to reduce damage, last but not least, your D. Of course no one is perfect. Even pros missed it every now and then. Point is to try to reduce the misses. Also, misses due to being cc-ed are still misses, because you should try to dodge as much cc as possible on your own.

Merrorhat•

One thing I noticed is that a lot of time I tend to use my Z to teleport to a dying enemy too late.

Well I'm obviously not going to vote for you if I died because you were too slow.

What would be good measures wrt. gameplay performance?

If you teleported and save me with perfect timing from a 100% dead situation multiple times.

This requires BW having good map awareness and reflexes. If you don't have your F1/2/3/4 hotkeys saved to locations, then you probably should do that.

In my experience people upvote those who make a lot of plays. Healer-wise that would be things like hot Auriel stuns/aegis, Anduin pulls, Deckard sleeps etc. Those stand out as things that you don't see often, where as good overall healing is expected, even if not often achieved.

3
nulloidOPPerfection goal that changes.•

True, I don't really know how to make plays with Brightwing (my main), other than Z'ing just at the right moment, which I have a lot of trouble with currently.

1
tensaixpMaster Tracer•

Z can also be used offensively for a gank. You can turn a 1v1 into a 2v1. Hence bw players really need to have good awareness.

1
nulloidOPPerfection goal that changes.•

I only do that when the solo laner is on low health, or I have nothing better to do. Should I consider doing it more often?

1
tensaixpMaster Tracer•

Do it if you think there is a gank going on. If you see a rotation going to gank someone (may not need to be the solo lane), you should be ready to tp. While the tp may waste the heal, the value you bring is the polymorph to prevent escape.

You can also see if the opposing solo laner is over extended, you can tp and see if you can get a kill, or force the solo laner to hearth. You can turn a 50-50 fight in the solo lane to your team advantage. After one or 2 tp, the opposing solo laner will most likely be more passive because he has to worry of a sudden 2v1.

MVP doesn't mean anything. And just healing big numbers only is not the mark of a good healer. Some healers has high healing throughput, which means their healing numbers will be very high. But whether they really save ppl is another issue. Clutch healing is easily gotten with healing over time or quick healing ticks like lucio. Are you using your abilities to save people? Are you following up with cc to secure kills? Are you doing the right thing at the right time? That is what get ppl to appreciate healers. I never had this problem when playing healers.

2
nulloidOPPerfection goal that changes.•

Putting it this way, suddenly it starts to make sense.

Are you using your abilities to save people?

I play mostly Brightwing, and I try to use my E on players who either run into or are already in the middle of a fight and are lowest on health, and use D when at least two players are rooted (or when I lose track of what's going on in a huge 5v5 fight - I usually pick the talent which makes my D heal). Also if someone is very low on health and are being chased, I try to polymorph the enemy closest to the player, to slow them down. One thing I noticed is that a lot of time I tend to use my Z to teleport to a dying enemy too late. I guess that could make people get mad. That's certainly something I want to improve at. And of course, I try to aim my Q so that I can get extra heals, but that is my least reliable skill.

Are you following up with cc to secure kills?

This I'm less confident with. When an enemy's trying to escape, I like to cast polymorph on them, but I don't do my build towards polymorph (neither do I pick the talent which lets my Q slow), so I guess this could be seen as a deficiency in my play.

Are you doing the right thing at the right time?

Very good question. I honestly don't know.

Thank you for offering a different perspective. I think I understand the situation a bit better now.

While E is pretty good for granting mobility, it is also pretty good in negating burst which usually comes in the form of ability damage. Poly is a very good follow up tool on the engage target. As soon your tank initiate with a cc, poly immediately as the cc is about to expire. Later talents also allow you to lower armour, then you would like to poly just before the damage from your dps hits. I hope you take hyper shift at 1 because bw heals are pretty anaemic without it.

With peekaboo it also grants both you and the target shields with allows the target and you to survive even longer as once you tele in you are likely to be focused. With the shield you have time to blink out if needed. Don't take the heal on D as it competes with peekaboo. The timing of Z requires you to be quick to recognise a target is being focused and Z as soon as they start to focus. A good Z is a a good cockblock for the opponent and allows your team to counter engage too. Q heals are just bonus so don't fret too much about it. Just use it when your tank cc or when they are slowed as its guaranteed.

This I'm less confident with. When an enemy's trying to escape, I like to cast polymorph on them, but I don't do my build towards polymorph (neither do I pick the talent which lets my Q slow), so I guess this could be seen as a deficiency in my play.

There is no need to take polymorph build, maybe poly at 4 only, though I like the AA range increase and cdr for D at 4. Z at 1 and 7 are very important in keeping you and your team alive.

Very good question. I honestly don't know.

You could send a replay and let ppl review.

Thank you for offering a different perspective. I think I understand the situation a bit better now.

Don't worry about MVPs. They mean nothing. The most impt are wins. If you do things right, you will win more often. And winning is more fun then losing and getting MVPs.

2
nulloidOPPerfection goal that changes.•

Thank you, this is very comprehensive. I'll keep these in mind. I admit I never watched back my replays, which might have been a stupid thing on my end.

Now I'll go and try to implement these tips.

And winning is more fun then losing and getting MVPs.

Amen to that.

Oh, I definitely show some deficiencies there. But you seem to be someone who Brightwing would enjoy having as a friend.

Don't go into it expecting upvotes, tank and healer are selfless roles. There are a lot of intricacies playing those roles that you don't have when going damage dealer. A lot of what you do will go unnoticed and you could say underappreciated, but that's just the nature of playing that role. As a healer you need to play not only for yourself, but for 5 people.

This might be insulting, but I just want to tell you how it looks from the outside, so you can recognize it and improve on it if you want. The way you present yourself is that of a weak-minded low ranked player. What I'm saying might be harsh, but it's not intended to insult. Playing the victim card and saying you deserve this or that and that you played well and deserve recognition is delusional. Watch some educational content about how to play your role or your hero and you will see you do a lot of mistakes. This is one of the biggest mistakes that low level players do, they blame their teammates and think they played perfectly.

As an avid brightwing player I would say she is one of the best healer to teach you to keep track of your whole team at all times. If you are not watching your teammates on the other lanes constantly to see if you need to teleport to them, you are not playing your hero to the fullest potential. As other people already mentioned, you can play around the F keys to quickly scout different locations and see how your teammates are doing. Personally I just got used to quickly clicking the minimap. You should watch a bit of gameplay from the perspective of Faker from league of legends, there you will see how crazy you can actually get with the F keys.

I'm pretty low ranked, that's true, but I'm not sure about the weak-minded part. I think it is just frustration.

Thank you for the tips though, I'll go and watch some videos.

1
Esthelion2•

I meant to say weak mindset, dunno if that fits better, but like I said don't take it personal and focus on yourself and the achievements, praises and rewards will come. Also for brightwing if you play with a buddy he could pick a strong solo laner and you could go for 2v1 plays with the teleport. Good luck buddy.

I just hit +1 for the MVP guy without really checking who's that or what they did.

MVP is meaningless in most cases, so by extension all the roles on the "board of achievements" are meaningless too. I don't really mean anything by that +1.

If I like someone's plays, I say smth like "GJ, N1, etc" into in-game chat.

1
nulloidOPPerfection goal that changes.•

I thought people actually put some thought into that. But after reading comments here, I realize how dumb I was for assuming that. Thank you for your take on it.

1
pelpotronicMaster Samuro•

People MVP "memorable plays", things THEY can notice with 0 awareness.

- If your entire team died just a second ago and you finish the core last 20%, your entire team is now staring at you through their screen => votes

- If your entire team is dead and the team is low, and you manage to somehow 1v3/4 the last remaining bits of HP left, your entire team is staring at you through their screen => votes

- If you save a couple of team members by bubbling or similar => votes

It's basically about flashy 1 second plays rather than soaking XP. I rarely vote personally, though I do appreciate a player who did the right thing at the right time over the game (beyond the clutch moments), even a split push Azmo and a team that just "poke the objective" instead of hard committing makes me warm inside and want to hug everybody.

Though I got 2-3 votes for near-perfect shotcalling in one game I played recently so this can happen too.

1
nulloidOPPerfection goal that changes.•

That would also explain my experience - guess it's easier for other roles to shine. Thank you for your summary.
