The leader status basically gives you control on whom to invite and kick in a group. You don't necessarily have to lead the group through the dungeon. Generally, the tank should be the one who is starting pulls regardless of whether or not he is the group leader.

Lol, I hear that, go into the menu-social-group, then click the player you want to lead and select “promote to leader” or something similar :p
