Finally got a turntable: Recommend me Records

Music

I just added nice turntable to my spaghetti mess of sound equipment. It outputs to monitors and sounds rad. But I need more albums. I used to pick them up at concerts, but COVID cancelled music.

So what are your favorite albums? What LPs should I order or go looking for?

Here’s my recommendations:

  • Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour
  • Beatles - Abbey Road (2019 Remaster by Giles Martin)
  • Probably any Carpenters record but there’s the most recent one that has Karen’s vocals with a brand new full orchestra.
  • Four Tet - Morning / Evening
  • Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough

Oh shit I don’t know anything about that. I’ll have to look it up. First LP still feels amazingly futuristic. The subsequent albums were alright.

It is slightly less gay than Plaid... which is extremely gay

IMO it's not really worth getting "new" albums unless you really like the band and want to support. mixing doesn't seem as good as LPs from 70s-80s etc.

I will recommend Technodelic - Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Well that’s not necessarily true. Plenty of records coming out have proper mastering. Just unfortunately have to go on Discogs or vinyl forums to read reviews.

yeah I’m talking to general because I don’t wanna spend all day researching different pressings on forums lol

hip hop in general I’ve found to be really bad

I was surprised by the quality of the sound on Violator by Depeche Mode. Sounded like a whole new record when I heard it on vinyl tbh.

Seems weird to recommend just any music.

Go to a record store. Check the dollar bin and the recent arrivals. Goodwill and Salvation Army can be decent too. Find the good stuff that people aren’t buying.

The most on point rec above is The Carpenters because it’s classic, cheap and plentiful. That’s the sort of thing you want to fill out your collection with.

Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run and all his other records too

Doobie Brothers - Minute by Minute. Every song MM sings is amazing and the others are OK too. And you can find it used at most record shops.

Think about what your favorite albums are and then check if there are Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs pressings of them. If your setup isn’t complete ass you’ll probably have a “holy shit this is what music is supposed to sound like” moment.

I’m by no means an audiophile. I run a U-Turn turntable with a midrange stylus through a very modest, inexpensive receiver and into inexpensive floor speakers. Not a Crosley playing through an onboard speaker, but not some kind of crazy system that lets you hear Karajan quietly fart during An die Freude either. And it’s incredible how good my MoFi pressing of Into the Labyrinth by Dead Can Dance sounds. I’d get MoFi for everything if more of what I listen to warranted that treatment and actually got it.

If you’re into jazz, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting your hands on any reissues from Gotta Groove records. A lot of reissues of those old jazz gems from the 60s and 70s that go out immediately because they’re that goddamn good. I buy em blindly and not once gotten a dud.

The Strokes - Is This It

Frank Zappa - Apostrophe

Herb Alpert - Rise

How good an LP will sound compared to analog can depend on how the album was mixed.

Older albums were more mixed in analog. They were made for turn tables. And that's the classic sound everyone is taking about compared to digital mixing.

In comparison, a lot of modern records are mixed digitally (meant for streaming + cd's), and then they're lazily exported to vinyl to make money off college kids with turn tables.

Sound quality will also differ based on the weight/quality of the record, and how it was stored.
