What’s the best way to politely decline an induction?
A little back story: I was diagnosed with gestational hypertension at 28 weeks with my first baby. It never turned into pre-eclampsia and never rose to life threatening levels. I think my highest reading was 140/95 but my obgyn wanted to deliver at 37 weeks to be proactive instead of reactive. Long story short my birth was extremely traumatic and we almost lost my son. He was stuck in the birth canal for over 3 hours and his heart rate was dropping off the monitor in the last 10 minutes before he had to be delivered via vacuum.
I went into this second pregnancy knowing this could happen again, but if I needed induced I’d opt for an elective cesarean. Otherwise, I want to deliver 100% naturally. I had a checkup with maternal fetal medicine today who told me I wouldn’t be going past 39 weeks because she didn’t want me developing pre-e. I truly do understand, but I also do not want to have a cesarean unnecessarily if my blood pressure is sitting at 110/70 like it has been this entire pregnancy. I would wholeheartedly agree to this plan the second I get a higher bp reading, but so far it has been perfect. I’ll be 32 weeks on Saturday. I plan on telling my OB that I’ll be declining an early delivery and monitoring my own blood pressure at home. I am well aware of the signs of pre-e and feel comfortable watching for them myself. How do I express this without coming across as a “know it all” patient? I just really need to advocate for myself and for my baby because of what happened last time.
