Just told my 8 year old son about my transition and I’m worried about how he took it.

My son was the last person I really cared about telling about my transition, I was more nervous to tell him than my parents.

I told him tonight (with my wife who was there for support and to pick up if I couldn’t find the right words). I started by easing into the conversation, talking about pride month and what it is representing. We’ve had talks with him about how love is love, he gets it, there’s nothing weird to him about same sex relationships. Then to how some people who are born one gender feel as if a mistake was made…yadda yadda, that’s what your “dad” is going through. Tried to make it clear that it’s only going to have a positive in how I can love him and care for him and that our family would only get better. We told him the changes would be slow but eventually it will look like he has two moms. The whole time he was pretty quiet but fidgety (like an 8 year old with adhd is known to be) until we got to that part and he got a confused look on his face.

He didn’t have any questions about any of that. He just asked if he was dreaming (weird question…) and then just kind of dismissed it all and then it was bed time.

I just feel so odd about it. He means the world to me and I guess I’m just hoping to hear some stories about how anyone else’s kids in a similar age group might have taken it or come around. I’m just worried that our relationship will change or that my mom will somehow be right in that this will negatively affect his life.
