Saw a lv 34 friend while I'm lv 21 and can no longer clear anything + run out of Gold to level up.
So probably have to wait for the daily Gold stage to refresh to get stronger.

Im only lv 36 rn so take my advice with a grain of salt. I recommend only upgrading 5 characters which are 4* and above (or 3* if you don't have any luck with gacha) since stats matter more than synergy in the early game.
You can also fast forward the passive gold / exp generation using gems. This is up to you, but since you get access to stuff like more jobs / level assist etc, it might be good to use the skips for the first few days if you really wanna speed up the progression. Additionally, there's a shop which exchanges points for gold which you can also refresh, so that's another minor source for gold.
Other than that, it's either you pay your way to progression like the lv 50+ whales or you wait patiently like us F2P players.

Just noticed today too, you can buy gold in the market for the blue in game currency
Well if he/she started earlier it could be just that. There is massive passive EXP gain in this game so any head start counts.
Also try to optimize your teams manually (and spread all the training pieces to at least get most of cards to at least lv20). In early stage of the game, you should be able to beat any main stages until your manager LV is too low (Venus Tower is another story.)
Passive exp gain doesn't require me to set up anything? Or I have to use that training room?
Nope, you just need to click the button in "Home" page (middle left) to collect the item and exp.
