He was fantastic, but not sure I agree that he's undoubtedly the best

He was surely one of the greats but it's honestly debatable between SD Burman and him for the GOAT title.

Well.. I should have put 'one of the best' in the title.

On the basis of melody, it's always Madan Mohan. He was a synonym for melody.

He's a great music director. Veer Zaara album and Lag Ja Gale are my favorites of his.
2
If you can listen to the making of Veer Zaara music. It’s his original compositions before they were tuned up. Absolutely amazing

My parents had an audio CD of his songs that they would play regularly when I was a kid. Great memories.

VZ has a tremendous soundtrack. Arguably the best ever romance themed album in BW history.
The picturization of 'Tere Liye..' and 'Main Yahan Hoon..' was out of this world. 'Tere Liye..' still gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it.
VZ is a complete package. An excellent film. Almost all the songs are beautifully woven into the storyline and convey the feelings wonderfully. Do Pal at the train station hits super hard. I also like the dream scenario of Yeh Hum Agayein Hain Kahan of Veer and Zaara fooling around in picturesque Europe.
You should also try ' Hanste Zakhm'.. specially Betaab Dil Ki Tammana Yahi Hai..
