Discussion prompts:

  1. Do you think that Marius was right to refuse the money? Would he have been justified in taking it until he could get on his feet?
  2. It doesn't sound like the requirements to be a lawyer were the same for Marius as they would be for us. Why do you think Hugo mentioned the romances scattered in with the law books? He was very down on Madame Thenardier for her reading of romances! Or are these different?
  3. Why can one not be a baron and a lawyer at the same time? Is M. Gillenormand right about this?
  4. Other points of discussion? Favorite lines?

Final line:

She listened, and the old man was saying: "If you were not a fool, you would know that one cannot be a baron and a lawyer at the same time."
