Why do Canadians drive/behave like this on road?

Good Question

Ok, I have lived in US and Canada (not an American) for decades but only a few years in Canada and I cannot figure why do you guys leave sooooooooooooo much space between two cars? This is while driving or even when stopped at a light. It just baffles me that given the crazy traffic in GTA and even outside GTA, why are we making life difficult for everyone.

Disclaimers:

  1. I am in no way advocating tailgating which I despise
  2. I know you are supposed to be able to see the tires of the car in front of you.
  3. I have seen it perfectly good weather so slipping on ice/snow is not a valid reason
  4. My observation is just based in Southern Ontario and seen people of all types doing it so immigrants is not a valid reason
