Mourning a vehicle?
This morning in the early(dark) hours of the morning, my grandfathers 2001 ram 2500 was stolen from his driveway. This was the very truck I had grew up in, learned to drive in both favorable and unfavorable weather in, and had many firsts in, and the truck I was set to inherit. I was the first outside of the house to find out as they knew I was the only one who still took pictures of it as of recently, and as soon as I heard I clung onto hope that it would be found. All day I scoured marketplace, Craigslist, etc... put up ads, contacted friends, etc... by late afternoon we had not even caught a glimpse of it. All of the sudden all I could think about were the things me and that truck had been through. It was the first truck I drove in the snow, rain, at night, a long distance, alone, and so on. I thought about the times I would pick up a friend in this old Dodge just because I loved the sound of the 24 valve turbo diesel cruising down the road. I though about no matter how hard I pushed her, she never once left me roadside. All of the sudden the hope turned to anger. During my daily trip to the gym all I could think about was what I’d do if I found out who took our truck. When I got home it turned to pure sadness, as I realized that her fate was to probably end up in a chop shop with the motor and transmission sold to some guy who wants to Cummins swap another chassis, and the body slowly stripped and sold off until she was everywhere but where she belonged, in our driveway. I honestly have not felt so sad over something in a long time, and I never once imagined that one could effectively mourn a truck. Am I just weird or is this common to people who have forged an attachment to a vehicle?
Also, here’s to (insert female name) the ram, who gave our family 20 years of faithful service, and never once gave up, hopefully we meet again.
