When's the earliest I can fly to the US?

I've got a flight that I can rebook at any time before the end of this year (thanks, KLM!) So the question is when should I slot myself in. I've been waiting three years to see my GF, so I'm willing to do just about anything.

Also, would it be wiser to get a Vacation VISA, or an ESTA? Thanks!
