Summer after first year med

I'm curious as to how med students generally spend the summer after first year? I'll be starting at UBC this August and my future landlord was willing to do a 10 month lease instead of a year (till June 1st, which would coincide with the last day of FLEX). I'm wondering if I'll need to spend June-Aug in Vancouver or if I can go back home during that time.
