Smudging my first apartment with my boyfriend

Could someone give me some tips on smudging? I just officially moved in with my boyfriend today and there is some energy that I would like to eliminate in this step of our journey. There are also pictures of his ex and a birthday card he keeps from her from years ago. He says there is no attachment so I need to release my negative energy towards it without promoting anything between them. Any advice would help! Thanks in advance 💙
