Sexually Identifying as an Attack Helicopter and Zen Enlightenment
Understanding how people end up thinking the way they do is a part of showing why that thinking isn't Zen. We see this sort of investigation taking place in Zen dialogues all the time.
Part 1 - Transperson Scifi
I was reading THIS ARTICLE about a science fiction story which was caught up in a huge controversy. When the story was first published, as I scifi fan with no clue about anti-trans-memes, I read it, liked it, admired it, not really paying attention to the controversy. Here is the key phrase from the article that should perk up the ears of any Zen student:
they truly feel that trans stories should only be written by trans people
Part 2 - New agerism Ad Hom
The new ager perennialists who stagger in here to celebrate their illiteracy and demand nouveau religious privilege for their pronouncements about how Zen is part of the universal LSD Jesus consciousness love to claim AD HOM - that is an attack against an argument by shifting the topic to the person making the argument.
New agers 100% of the time can't say what argument is being attacked when they claim ad hom... BUT... they aren't really interested in ad hom, they are interested in a related philosophical principle, correspondence theory.
Essentially, this boils down to "if it is true, then it is true for everyone *because it is real".
Part 3 - Exit Stage Right Pursued by Zen Master
Cuiyan , thinking he had attained something of Zen, left the monastery of Shishuan Chuyuan [six generations after Linji], when he was still a young monk, to travel all over China. Years later, when Cuiyan returned to visit the monastery, his old teacher Shishuan asked, “Tell me the summary of Buddhism.
Cuiyan answered, “if a cloud does not hang over the mountain, the moonlight will penetrate the waves of the lake.”
Shishuan looked at his former pupil in anger. He said, “You are getting old! Your hair has turned white, and your teeth are sparse, yet you still have such an idea of Zen. How can you escape birth and death?”
Tears washed Cuiyan’s face as he bent his head. After a few minutes he asked, “Please tell me the summary of [the Zen Law].”
“If a cloud does not hang over the mountain,” the teacher replied, “the moonlight will penetrate the waves of the lake.
Before the teacher had finished speaking, Cuiyan was enlightened.
This is my favorite example, but by no means the only example, of Zen Masters demonstrating that when the unenlightened person says stuff or even quotes stuff, it's not enlightened
Part the End
So, are Zen Masters and transpersons on the same page? A page the philosophers, and among them the religion-of-philosophies, perennialists, dare not read from?
I don't think so. But why? Is trans after all a binary state in which there is more than binary? Who gets to say?
Do Zen Masters get to play the "only enlightened people" card? Or is that just their own BS?
The simple answer is that we want minority representation for the truth of it because we are reasonably concerned that representation of minorities by other people doesn't rely on truth, but on perception.
But what if I say that Zen Masters do not want truth at all, they want clarity of perception?
Will that satisfy you?
