Am I being racist when in barcelona I clutch tightly to my valuables when anyone comes near me?

A couple years ago I went to Barcelona and got my bag stolen, it had my passport and laptop and all my money. It was a terrible experience.

I actually almost got pickpocked the day before, but I caught the thief pulling my wallet out of my pocket and he ran away without succeeding. The crazy thing was how non-thief like he looked. Like just a normal spanish guy, early 20's, had a couple thief friends with him who also looked like college students, all dressed normally.

After that I would always be on high alert whenever anyone got near me in Barcelona. And to this day I have a stereotype of Barcelonians that there's a big chance they'll pickpocket you if you let them, especially if you don't look native so they think you're a tourist.

If I were to be in an elevator with other people in Barcelona, I would clutch tightly to where my money and ID is.

So I was just thinking, is this similar to how a white woman might clutch tightly to their purse when a black person walks into the same elevator?

The scenario seems similar - she has preconceived notions that she isn't safe with that person based on his looks.

I have this preconceived notion that I'm not safe with people who look spanish in barcelona.

In both scenarios, the odds that specific person is going to do anything is really small.

Yet at the end of the day I can't help but be on high alert after what happened to me.

So yeah just wanted to hear your guys's opinions on this, because I might be missing an important difference between the two scenarios.
