First time purchase. Deciding between the S&W M&P 380 Shield and the S&W M&P9 Shield EZ

Obligatory apology if this belongs elsewhere.

I'm purchasing my first pistol and have run into problems deciding on which one to chose. I had originally thought the Sig P365 XL was the way I wanted to go, but I read for a beginner shooter the S&W were more tailored to my experience. Plus, I feel like I need a manual safety. I think I can boil my use case down to pretty much home defense. I do have a range right down the street, but I'm usually pretty busy so I don't think that will be a frequent stop.

If anyone can shed any light on pistols you recommend I'd be appreciative. I was trying to keep it under $550
