Help me tech - Mono Red Kurkesh

Hi lovely friends of Budgetbrews,

After seeing EDHRECs latest episode on underplayed commanders, it got me thinking and wanting to brew. I love all things red, especially mono red, so Kurkesh for me seemed like a great fit, he makes some janky artifacts absolute houses.

Now I cant really decide on which way to take him.

Charge Counters? Energy Counters? Planeswalkers? Tokens?

I think Charge and energy counters is the janky fun way to take it but I like board presence, so I am leaning towards all different token generators and tap abilities.

Let me know what you think and if you've had experience building Kurkesh.

The list went up in price due to Valakut package - I not really sure if I will include that yet. Probably not.

Cheers, hope you're all staying safe out there!!!!

If you're playing with counters, which is a really fun way to play kurkesh, I would recommend proliferate cards. Contagion clasp copied can lead to a lot of counters. Contagion engine is better but cost prohibitive if you're on a budget

So im no expert on kurkesh, but i play tested your deck a bit and here are my thoughts. Your stuff is really mana intensive, but you have done a good job of counter acting that with high ramp cards. As currently constructed feels similar to a [[bosh]] deck. Which bosh is an awesome card in this deck. Feels like you want the game to go late so you have just ridiculous tons of mana and artifacts to activate. A few cards that can keep your opponents down in the process are [[Mizzium morters]] to sweep the board of small creatures or target down a troublesome one. One weird avenue you could take would be [[possibility storm]] you might not mind casting your low mana artifacts and potentially hitting somehthing big. It does not shut down your activated abilities of artifacts. So once you are set up you should be fine with it out while making it really hard for opponents to interact with your board state. Idk, something to consider, its a weird card.

I also thought [[thopter assembly]] might be a cool card for you. Your deck is kinda in between "i only want to ramp and play big artifacts" and "i want a bunch of small artiracts to cast spellls with affinity and sac". Ultimately you probably will have to go one direction or the other but thopter assembly would be a great include if you go wide with stuff to sac and spells with affinity more. Another MUST HAVE for you in this deck would be [[mimic vat]] and [[steel hellkite]]. Mimic vat synergies SO well with all the sacing you do expecially when you have to sac a big creature to bosh. It also just hits random stuff from board wipes etc AND with you commander you can create two copies of the creature for the turn for 4 mana which could be great. (two hasty hellkites each turn for 4 mana is no joke). Steel hellkite is cheap but for a limited time only as it just got reprinted. SO awesome in this deck. Attack and copy his ability to take out two different cmcs of stuff. You could sweep a guys mana rocks and creatures.

The final and most glaring concern was card draw. You ramp well and get out big things but honestly depending on your draws you can run completely out of gas even if someone doesn't [[nev's disk]] all your stuff etc. Being a fellow mono red player. I know the struggle. Unlike aggro decks you need more than just card filtering (although you should add some of that in once you have the deck trimmed down). Here are a few options I found. [[mask of memory]] on boss or a flyer can generate cards over time. [[Culling dias]] or [[sacrificial dias]] fits your deck theme really well, synergizes with your commander and can get you cards especially if end up focusing on going wide more. Once you have other engines set up [[Alhammarret's Archive]] can get you really great value over time without having to pay to activate it each turn. [[Sunset pyramid]] is pretty mana intensive but I think it works just well enough with your commander to function it entd up being 9 mana for 6 cards over 3 turns. It is also really nice to have a few low cmc draw functions to get out early. [[Sandstone oracle]] is an underated card in mono red/white decks. Gets you a sac for bosh, a flyer and anywhere from 3-5 cards. [[Loreseeker stone]] is another one that would work well in your deck. While not exactly card draw [[chaos wand]] could be a fun way to generate value off other peoples decks. [[dreamstone hedron]] potentially could be worth it in your deck do to so much high cmc stuff and sacing for a bunch of cards in a pinch. That and if you find any other artifacts that are low cmc and can sac for a card (two if copied) id put them in. I really like your inclusion of pyrite bomb and commander's sphere in the deck. The only other potentials I saw were [[scarcrone]] (its a little pricey but works for cards or recursion). If you end up going more budget and find yourself at the bottom of your play group most nights throw in [[humble defector]] and make a deal with the next worse player "if i draw and send him to you can you draw and send him back?" if you aren't viewed as a threat you can get a ton of value out of this little guy before other people kill it.

For take outs [[heartseeker]] is just WAY too expensive and needs and artifact to equip to to copy its abilty. [[idol of oblivion]] is good card draw but is not supported by your deck at all. there is a few token producers but not much. Either move toward go wide and keep it in or move toward big artifacts and play more around bosh. You might be able to pull of a little of both but this card needs more support than is currently in the deck to work. The eldrazi token is pretty meh can sac it to bosh and vanilla creatures with not trample givers in the deck are very meh in edh. [Ghirapur Aether Grid]] is no go for me probably in any deck. If you swithc and go Super wide than maybe but it would take a ton of creatures and mana ot actually make work. [[Spine of Ish Sah]] is the other end of this spectrum if you keep moving towards the big artifacts sac to bosh type strategy which i think is what you deck currently is leaning towards than this becomes a good card. If its not going to be sac'd to something than its just a 7 mana chaos warp at sorcery speed. I personally am not a big fan of [[myriad landscape]] especially when you have other cool ways to ramp with artifacts that can use your commander but I know other like it. Im also not big on [[mage ring network]] if you take into account that it taps itself to charge the mana cost to get it going are just too high. If you have more cards that care about artifact count you might want to consider some artifact lands i dont know how expensive they are.

Overall i like the concept. You found some cool niche pieces. I really like [[liquidmetal torque]] and artifact killers, [[Transmogrifying Wand]] is a card i have NEVER seen but i feel should become way more common if chaos warp keeps going up in price. i like the Basalt monolithe untap artifact combo it isnt new but it works and it gets you the mana you need for your big things. I think as you are currently constructed id focus on big mana, sac/recursion, of big cmc artifacts to things like bosh. Id ease up on the go wide stuff and just use low cmc mana artifacts etc as sac fodder for your recursion engines. Thats just what works best with the step up pieces you have.

I'll just start by saying thank you so much for testing and putting alot of time into your reply.

I want to respond again when I have the time to.

I really need to sit down and figure out what I want this deck to do.

Hey man, I have made some serious changes and hopefully made it more optimised.
