Is the CWE a suburban hell scape?

The CWE is a great example of having a world class hospital in your back yard who employs thousands and thousands of workers can save a wasteland neighborhood. Why don’t more neighborhoods just open up massive healthcare institutions?

I mean it’s not like you could open up a large business in most neighborhoods because of precisely the zoning the person you replied to was talking about. The fact that CWE has the hospital is important but that doesn’t mean we should ignore the benefits of upzoning. CWE is far from the only place where higher density construction is happening also.

That world class hospital is located right next to a world class medical school.

Aside from Boston, not many cities have a plethora of top notch universities aside hospitals sprinkled throughout its many neighborhoods.

This is hardly housing that will really matter or make a difference all of these developments are all luxury housing. Its not going to matter if everybody is priced out of thecity.

This article refers to the Optimist building as “brutalist.” Wild.

Yeah I’m saying this building is very far from brutalist. It’s a quintessential mid-century modern building. I think the Bank of America building a block to the west is sort of brutalist. But not the Optimist International building.

Chris Stritzel at CityScene-STL was one of the first to break the news on this and his article is located here: https://www.cityscene-stl.com/post/7-story-150-unit-apartment-building-proposed-for-optimist-international-site-in-central-west-end

Lux Living is the company that's looking for tax breaks from the city that it just sued over its development on DeBaliviere, right? They also I believe resurrected a neighborhood group in DeBaliviere Place and installed their own CEO as its head just to oppose a neighboring development that will compete with theirs. They seem very sleazy.

It'd be cool to see some investment somewhere outside of downtown, midtown, and CWE.

Why is every single damn development only luxury housing. This isn't mixed use either which is even worse. I think the recent mixed use developments are positive but its all luxury shit, its not going to do any good if we just price people out of the city.

This gentrification style architecture is so ugly

Careless-Degree•

What is “gentrification style”?

3
OnfortuneswheelFPSE•

He probably means the five-over-one/Texas Doughnut style. I agree it's pretty boring. Not to mention, this is the developer that owns the building on West Pine that partially collapsed from lack of maintenance, so who knows what sort of longevity this building will have.

One-plus-five

One-plus-five, also known as five-over-one, or a podium building, is a type of multi-family residential building commonly found in urban areas of North America. The mid-rise buildings are normally constructed with four or five wood-frame stories above a concrete podium (usually for retail or resident amenity space). The one-plus-five style of buildings exploded in popularity in the 2010s, following a 2009 revision to the United States based International Building Code, which allowed up to five stories of wood-framed construction.

You can’t gentrify a neighborhood that always had wealthier people living there

3
IRAn00bCWE•

I agree you can’t gentrify the CWE, but if you told me they were building a new gentrification building in your neighborhood, I would know that they were building a building that looked exactly like this.

Far nicer than the Optimist International building.
