When's appropriate times to use 3rd and 1st person in combat?

Joined a faction and my pvp skills are lacking I've been going on pvp servers the last couple days and practicing, I was under the impression that 1st person in combat is the way to go so I've been peaking in 3rd person than quickly switching to 1st person when it's time to engage.

Today probably the best pvp'er in our faction told me he normally fights in 3rd person because he can just quickly pop people and only uses 1st person in close quarters situationally.

So my question is in what situations do you guys prefer 1st or 3rd person? And any general pvp tips are appreciated
