Help me help a friend

My friend needs out of her marriage with an abuser, physcological so far but we are both worried it will lead to physical. What do you wish someone could of done for you to help the transition? What was your biggest worry? How long did going back to them stay as an option in your head? Are there words you wish someone would of said to you to help you make the leap sooner?
