Just a rant over an insensitive comment received.

I Try not to give things like this my energy, but I’ve been stewing over it awhile and thought maybe I’d get it t off my chest and move on.

Have you ever had someone say something to you that just rubbed you the wrong way, or you found insensitive?

Some background, I lost my mom last fall to a somewhat rare form of dementia. The illness and watching her decline was HARD. It wasn’t some ‘forgetful, happy in their own world’ type of disease, it was paranoia, confusion, and at times violent until it progressed enough she couldn’t walk, bathe or feed herself. From diagnosis to death was about 5 years.

A friend of mine (and we have admittedly drifted apart from each other) was talking with me for the first time since my mom died, and the topic of the disease came up. Which lead her to say something along the lines of ‘yeah, dementia’s s hard, but idk, ALS is worse, being trapped in your own mind like that.’ I just kinda shrugged and said something along the lines of “yeah, I don’t know”. I was tired and taken aback enough to not really be able respond in the moment.

And yeah, is ALS horrible? Yeah! But to use this conversation to highlight that she thinks my family could have had it worse just has left me still ruminating on it. You can’t quantify grief. Period. All terminal brain diseases suck. It’s not some competition.

So, here I am weeks later posting to Reddit to get it out of my system and move on. Thanks for providing me this safe place and reading my rant!
