reliability of kr4/kr1

I know that mechanical tail switches can be among the most reliable. This is why I am tempted to get for a flashlight naive friend a tactical light such as a Fenix - I also know these to be durable. Is the KR1/KR4 as reliable and durable as a tactical light?
