The original color of the Statue of Liberty, before it acquired its famous green patina

Kansas has a copper dome on the state capitol. For all of my childhood and early adult years, it had a bright green copper patina. A bit over a decade ago the building had a renovation and improvement project that included a component of replacing the copper. Now it is a copper-brown, but it took me a long while to adjust to the difference. Apparently it will oxidize once again to green in 30-40 years.

I think the first state capitol I saw was Iowa's and the gilded dome made a big impression on me as a kid.

I seem to remember there was discussion about gilding the statue of liberty but obviously they decided against it. I think it'd be a bit ostentatious, but it'd be something to see.

Grew up in Topeka. When I was a kid I always just thought the dome was green stone. Hell, we even took field trips to the Capitol. They probably mentioned that it was copper in those tours, but I was way more interested in the John Brown painting. That motherfucker just looked crazy...and I loved it.

Not enough elbow grease

Why didnt they coat it? It looks so much better copper.

Copper naturally gets a green patina and it's generally considered a desirable aesthetic. The Statue of Liberty was also designed with this outcome in mind. Additionally, the green patina protects the copper underneath better than any artificial coating would be able to.

tl;dr they didn't try to prevent it because they wanted it to happen.

Most people prefer patina on copper. It can take a long time to develop unfortunately.

A good one for sure but what about YoungMC's Rust an Œuvre?

How long did it take to oxidize?

Kinda makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Acidic rain from pollution will bring it back to its original color in a couple of years.

This imagery looks like it's straight out of the Greek or Roman empire. It looks great in its original color but the green patina is iconic.

Cringe. Replace it with a statue of glorious chairman Mao Ze Dong. Kill all capitalists and make USA part of China.

EDIT: I am not ironic, I am an r/GenZeDong member and I have 1 IQ which means I'm number one smart

Funny that the French gave the US such and extravagant gift, considering they can't stand us now.

When America tries to sell the Statue of Liberty at a pawn shop I hope they don’t take a wire brush and try clean that patina off because that is money to potential buyers.

Ah yes, every now and then I have to remind myself that people in the US still support slavery.

1
Gabriele1966•

I'm not American, nor do I live in the US. Also not sure how making prisoners work instead of getting fat on the tax payer's dollar equals slavery, you ignorant potato.

Please define slavery for me.
