What model would you use for the Giant inducement?

TableTop

As per the title, I've been wondering what model would best suit the Giant that we can now play with as of the Death Zone supplement.

For those of you who don't have the supplement, the Giant is essentially a S7 player that takes up 4 squares of space on the pitch.

As such its got a whopping 68mmx68mm of floor space to work with. So essentially anything that can be squeezed onto a round 60mm base.

However, I've so far been unable to find a model that would fit the warhammer fantasy / blood bowl aesthetic and fit inside it.

The models that have come the closest so far are either the AoS Mancrusher Gargant or Ghorgon ( I main Chaos Chosen in BB2, so the Ghorgon would fit very nicely if I were to take the plunge into the Tabletop world with my favourite team!).

But the problem with both of those is that their stance is just too wide. The Ghorgon is shown on a 50x100 square base on GW's store and it takes up the whole thing and the Mancrusher seems to occupy pretty much the same dimensions with its feet. As such I would need to somehow model them with a stance that is like 40% or more narrower. Not only might this be beyond my skills (I have newer owned any physical models before), but it might make the models as wobbly as the Total War: Warhammer 2 version of the Ghorgon, and that's as wobbly as it gets.

Other models that come close and would fit on the 60mm base are the Fomoroid Crusher and Ogroid Myrmidon, again from the AoS catalogue. These guys in fact come with a 60mm base so they would certainly fit. However, they leave quite a bit of empty space compared to Blood Bowl big guy models who routinely invade the personal space of everyone in their 8 adjacent squares. I even did some measurements from my screen and came to the conclusion that those models are only like 50% taller than, say, a minotaur. Certainly big enough to justify S7, but not quite enough to be truly gigantic in my mind.

As such, with this long introduction finally out of the way... Do you guys know of models that are somewhere between the Ghorgon and a Fomoroid Crusher in size, that would fit on a 60mm base and would not look out of place on the Blood Bowl pitch?

The Mancrusher Gargant is the old WHFB Giant reskinned for AoS, so is, in theory, the best choice. I can see maybe mounting one on a 60mm round base with one foot hanging off of the edge. If you're ambitious enough, you could even convert it to look like he's taking a kick at the ball/an opposing player.

If you've got deeper pockets, you could also look at some classic models from the WHFB ranges of yesterday. The classic Marauder Giant, The Giants of Albion, and the Tomb Kings Bone Giant would all fit onto a 60mm base easily (the latter three were designed to fit on 50mm square bases).

If you have really deep pockets then you could spring for the staff appreciation 54mm Troll. I saw one of these used as a counts-as WHFB Giant back in the mid-2000s, so the scale is about right.

Damn, now I want a Khemri team :D

Oh man those are all such excellent, classic giants.

That marauder giant was like the only WHFB giant for about 20 years wasn't it? Absolute classic.

I have a mancrusher gargant model (slightly modified, weapon removed) mounted to a 60mm base without issue. It is a LITTLE tight, but it really doesn't look out of place.

Man, I wish those were available for reasonable prices still!

The aos Dankhold Troggoth is meant to be based on 60mm, it is essentially a giant troll so if you have any greenskin team it would fit perfectly I think.

I’ve used the Fomoroid Crusher and it was perfect for the base size, and looked much more appropriately strength 7 than the Mancrusher Gargant which I also tried, but looks much more like it would be strength 10 or something. But either one works! You should go with what you think is the coolest. The little bit of official art we have for the Sporting Giant depicts them as a mancrusher gargant for what that’s worth.

I didn’t know about this supplement but I’ve Been planning a kitbashed imperium of man team (1:1 proxy for lizardmen) and this makes it sound like I can bring in a Dreadnaught for the big guy!

The Mantic Games giant is a great model and it's a bargain. There is a youtube video comparing it to the GW Mega-Gargants. https://www.manticgames.com/games/kings-of-war/goblins/giant/

I really like this one, the 6th edition WHFB model.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GPqBJoc\_FJs/Ta1MCz9vc4I/AAAAAAAAAG8/dlZ2leADUMQ/s320/Giant.JPG

Pros:

+you can play it at GW stores

+it looks the most 'Blood Bowly' of all the GW options

+it's not too huge

+it's a very nice model

+it's a huge chunk of metal (if that's your thing)

Cons:

-out-of-print for years so not easy to find

-...especially not for cheap (I'm glad I'm not planning to use a giant any time soon!)

-it's a huge chunk of metal (if that's not your thing)

Thanks for the heads up. I found this big fella at my FLGS used for $19.99CAD. Looks perfect for the pitch!

Haha! Dueling Grounds in Peterborough, Ontario has a nice selection of used Warhammer and 40k (and mostly metal)! It's a great spot.

My group is using the Fomoroid Crusher for our giant.

I was looking for some nice ogre models on MyMiniFactory recently, and shortlisted this giant:

Unfortunately the file isn't accessible any more via MMF, but they do have a Facebook page. There are companies out there that will 3D print for you.

Thanks, that might just be the thing if this planning ever becomes a reality (RIP my wallet if it does), and if I can find a non-GW store that hosts blood bowl players (strict no non-GW products policy at my nearest GW store)

1
Genghis_Kong•

I've never known a GW store host BB events. The community is almost all independent / NAF-affiliated as far as I know.

3
ItlaedisOP•

Guess I'd have to do some searching around then if I wanted to get into tabletop as I just assumed that I could find players at the local GW...

1
Genghis_Kong•

You might find players at the store - or your store manager should be able to point you in the right direction for a local league - but they tend not to happen at stores.

Blood Bowl was fully unsupported by GW for the best part of 20 years so the community kept it alive totally separate from the 'official' channels, and generally still exists in wargaming clubs and local leagues rather than GW venues.

That said, might be different in different locations so see how you go.

That looks nice, shame that the base is a bit larger than desired at 75mm square. So it would invade the neighbouring squares somewhat significantly...

But that did give me an idea, I wonder if a Ghorgon could be fit into a 70mm square base... That would be absolutely ideal for the Chaos Chosen

1
DarksideStudios•

Looking at the image, it looks like there's room to put it on a smaller base.

2
ItlaedisOP•

Oh yeah, true

1
PurpleBunz•

If you want a nurgle themed giant, just kitbash about 7000 nurglings together and bam.

2
davidn81•

I've been wondering about this myself. Idk cause I've never held one, but could you reasonably fit a Steam Tank on that base? I assume not, but man would that be neat!

2
Sinocatk•

A normal human lineman from a giants bloodbowl set would be ideal as would a Titan from a halfling sized bloodbowl set.

2
Epimetheus888•

I’m using the Fomoroid Crusher on a 60mm base. It works perfectly. Note that I don’t use the sculpted floor that the mini comes with, as I do my own BB basing, but that still works fine.

It is still bigger than any BB player, even a BB ogre, but much shorter than any of the AoS Gargants, which is great, as the AoS minis are far too big for BB - they look a bit silly IMHO being put on the board.

I am curious about stats and rules for the giant

1
ItlaedisOP•

Costs 350k as an inducement and you may only have one of them.

It additionally counts towards the cap of a maximum 3 mercenary players on the team. The other mercenaries are: Stunty Superstars (max 2), Legendary Linemen (max 2), Brutal Blocker (max 1), Reliable Ringers (max 2), Bona Fide Big Guy (max 1)

MA 6, S 7, AG 5+, PA 5+, AV 11+

Always Hungry, Bone Head, Break Tackle, Juggernaut, Loner(4+), Mighty Blow(+2), Multiple Block, Stand Firm, Throw Team-mate

On the pitch they choose to face towards one of the end zones or one of the sidelines. They have tackle zones all around them except in the 4 squares behind them.

If any effect hits any part of the giant, then the entire giant is hit by the effect. Such as if any part of the giant is pushed off the pitch, then the whole giant is off the pitch. If one square of it is inside a wizards fireball, then the giant is hit by the fireball and so on.

When moving, it can walk over prone and stunned players as if they weren't there, but can't end their move in a place where a prone or stunned player is occupying any of the giant's four squares. If they end their turn on top of a prone or stunned player because the giant Fell Over, then the prone/stunned players are pushed into a square the giant's owner decides for them as if a push-back had happened.

They also cannot at any point of their movement move to a place where any of their squares would share the space with a standing player, yours or the opponents.

When dodging every player that would mark you in your destination squares gives a -1 modifier. So you could possibly end up with a -11 modifier even though no single square would individually be marked by that many players.

The giant is good at throwing team-mates. Fumbled throws may be re-rolled for free.

The giant is also good at interfering with passes, reducing any negative modifiers by up to 2.

When a ball bounces from the giant, it can go in any of the 12 neighbouring squares so roll a D12, if you have one, or a D16 rerolling 13+ to decide where the ball goes.

Everything else either works as you'd expect them to work or GW has failed to adress any lingering questions as that was everything (in a condensed form).

How about using the... giant? Mine worked well for 2 years already:
