Thinking first Porsche - how do you guys do it?

Guys, first post here - this has been running around in my head for months.

The classic problem - do I go all in with a sports car (in my case, Cayman S or GTS), or bend the rules and see how a Macan will do?

How do you guys do it day to day driving a 911 or 718? Is there enough room in a 718 for daily stuff, really?

I have no kids, work a corporate gig... I see no barriers, but would still be my first plunge into a sports car which I have never done.

To be honest, I am leaning towards a Macan - but thats just me playing it safe. Need some perspective from you guys please!

I vote for the sports car. 718 will have enough space for 90% of your daily needs but 200% more fun than macan.

A Macan isn’t much of a compromise either, but yes I’d rather a Cayman/911 all day. I do love my Macan GTS though. It doesn’t leave me wanting for much.

Thanks - I hear this a lot and probably need to test drive both soon

Go for a 911. You’ll thank us later. 🤙👌

I wish it’s slightly out of budget !!

Get a 911, if you don’t have kids you’ll be fine. If you still need a car for groceries get the Suv

If Porsche Drive is available where you are, you can borrow all different types of Porsches on a subscription based model. You can see what works for your lifestyle before committing.

Great feedback. I wish we had Porsche Drive in the NY metro area.

I will have to check if we have this ! Is it a monthly subscription ?

Honestly, I would test drive a Carrera S and a Cayman GTS (Or GT4) and go with your gut. There is no wrong answer, and you'd be best served using your heart as much as your head but not disregarding either to the point of getting into trouble.

It's your first Porsche, so it'll be special. Getting something that 'clicks', that will last you years and keep a smile on your face will be worth it. Good luck!

You’re right I will take my time with this. 911 S is out of my budget but will try the GTS 718 for sure

Thank you this is super helpful!

How’s the cayman on longer distances ? Think 3-4 hour drives . Does it make sense for the car ?

I also have no kids. I also work a corporate gig. I commuted on a motorcycle for 6 years. Sometimes I’d pick up dinner or go by the pharmacy on it.

I couldn’t do a grocery run on the bike, but I could pick up the one or two things we were missing.

I can do a full week+ grocery run in my (non-Porsche) 2-seater, but I have to pack it carefully.

I can do a full grocery run in the 911 without even having to be careful about packing it. The backseat plus frunk is more than plenty. The 718 has frunk and trunk and should similarly have plenty of grocery space.

We used to even do the occasional hardware store run in the GT3, before we bought a stuff-hauler car. It won’t hold long stuff, but I can bring home plenty of plants and dirt for gardening (even the much smaller 2-seater can do that).

One needs far less car for day-to-day life than many people assume.

I daily a 911 and have no issues. Granted, I got a Macan for the wife just in case I needed a little extra room.

2
ddlbbOP•

How does the Macan drive give you have a 911 ? Does it scratch the itch or not really

2
nschafler992 C4S (daily) and Macan S (wife)•

Ugh -such a hard question. I got the 911 first and it blows away the Macan. Also it’s a manual so big points there. That being said, if I got the Macan first, I probably would have stopped there.

Macan GTS, understated, subtle. Especially the 2022 which is now the flagship of the Macan line-up.

Unless you're comparing with 718 GT4 / Spyder, I wouldn't bother with the lower models (not even the GTS 4.0).

Since you're leaning towards a Macan, I'm going to push you in that direction. Any Macan GTS is great!

It doesn't shout out loud and the performance (especially the impressive handling) is by far superior of any other SUV.

2
SoulStone1986•

This reply is spot on. my pre order form states for the 22 Macan GTS with sports chrono will 0-60 in 4.1 seconds. For an SUV that's plenty for the road. my 2016 GTS is also a rocket and handles superbly when the suspension is adjusted.

1
ddlbbOP•

This is super helpful . What makes you say forget lower models of 718 ? Just curious

1
heff_ay•

The GTS is great IMO, give it a drive if you can

2
ddlbbOP•

Thanks ! Do you own one? Struggling between GTS and S - once I put all the options Id want on a 718 S I end up about similar price to a GTS ... weird place to be in

The lower models do not provide the visceral experience compared to GT4 / Spyder.

I currently have a GT3 Touring and a Boxster S track car. (Formerly had 981 Spyder and then a 718 GT4) I almost bought a Macan GTS as my daily a few years ago. It was superb, but I wanted something a bit less conspicuous at the time, so I got a 2017 Audi S6 which for my purposes is the best all-around car. (Daily? Check. Road trip? Check. Track? Check. Seriously, I have tracked it.)

Here’s a 100% petrolhead option for your situation: CPO 3-yo Macan GTS w towing package, Trailex 8055 sports car trailer, and a Cayman S track car (there are absurdly overpriced ones but also some very surprising deals out if you’re discerning).

More of my thoughts on this here: https://www.thestartingline.us/post/getting-on-track

Get a 911. Back seats fold down so there's plenty of room. Anyway, if you have less space your just cart less junk around! Owning a sports car is well worth the compromise. You'll never regret it.

  1. Best daily driver ever. Remember the cayman has no rear seat. In the 911 it’s not at all useful for anyone to sit in but you can definitely haul a lot (including two sets of golf clubs) and still haul things in the frunk (including groceries). Can’t do them both with a cayman. Heck I don’t think you can get a set of clubs in a cayman unless you take up the passenger seat.

The driving experience between the two cars is really different. Cayman being mid engine really changes the driving dynamics compared to a 911. You should drive both.

Most Porsche dealers will allow for a weekend test drive and see which one is easier for you to live with.

All this being said, I have no idea why you are considering the Macan. If it’s for hauling bikes you can do that with both cayman and 911. If it’s more than that well then maybe the suv is the right choice, but in that case maybe consider the panamera GTS!

1
ddlbbOP•

I will definitely test drive . Will be my first sports car so need to see how mid engine feels for sure

Can you talk a little about your experience with golf bags? Do you have it on the passenger seat? If so, do you put a seat cover first? Full set?

Also what kind of trolley do you have (if any)? One of those fancy super foldables?

One of the reasons I opted for the Mac (against a 911) was the issue with the golf bag. It even barely fits into the Macan's trunk, the driver head goes into that little niche on the right (standard size set). I also have a pretty big trolley (Bag Boy Quad XL) which I keep in the trunk.

1
[deleted]•

I can fit two full size bags in the rear seats folded down. Bags with irons and a putter can stack on top of one another, woods and drivers need to be pulled from the bag and laid diagonally from the driver/passenger seat rear footwell. It’s a surprisingly easy thing to do. Most people are amazed. I do not use a trolley which I could see taking up some space.

I have a cab which makes using any sort of roof or over the engine storage unavailable. I’ve met many people with coupes who have that type of storage for extra space or even skis and bikes. In Germany this is very common.

Hope this was helpful.

diffuser_vorticity2020 Macan turbo•

Thank you for your insight. I've sat in many 911s but was completely unaware the rear seats are foldable, only that there's a configurator option of having no rear seats at all.
In the parking lot of our golf club I usually see people with 911s having the bag on the passenger seat which I always deemed quite inconvenient.

I'd never get a roof box if I had a 911.

Keep in mind it’s just the back rest portion that folds down and creates a parcel shelf.

I owned a lava orange 718 Boxster back in 2016 having owned TT's, S2000's and similar priced cars before. It was a big price hike for me and I ended up part exchanging it 8 months later.

Whilst I'm sure the color was part of it, it attracted a little too much of the wrong attention for me. whilst not a 911 or top tier car It was my pride and Joy and my daily driver. I got fed up of the shi**y comments that come with a statement car like this. I could probably live with that if it was a weekend runner and garaged but I never felt comfortable leaving in car parks and was constantly twitching my blinds at the slightest of movements outside.

You may be in a very different situation but it's certainly worth considering every detail, and this was my experience.

Long story short I have been driving a White Macan GTS for a couple of years now and it is a great balance of understated daily performance driving. The only heads it turns are really from those who know what they are looking at and give the 'nod' of approval.

I've just placed a deposit on the new spec GTS and in an almost identical spec.

ddlbbOP•

You sound like me , although I’d not get an orange car :)

I’m not flashy - haven’t even had a car in 8 years. But well, life is short. There’s a balance between what I want and unwanted attention that I am trying to balance.

Macan feels like the sweet spot . While I get it’s not a pure sports car - it probably keeps away that unwanted attention. I’m super torn here.

Was it the Color mix with a Porsche 718 that made it grab so much attention ?

1
matt-the-racer•

The colour certainty makes a huge difference to the attention you get and how happy you are to leave it unattended, my 996 is zenith blue and sticks out like a sore thumb, my friends 997 turbo in dark grey vanishes next to it, yet its a far more valuable car... I didn't go for the blue to stand out, just loved the look of it on the car!

I'd have to go 911 then cayman on choice, don't get stuck on newer cars, just the best your budget allows most "older" porsches are so well looked after you'll get years of reliable driving, at lest enough to decide if you move into a newer one or that a sports car isn't for you... Although after owning a porsche I don't think personally I'll ever be happy without one now!

2
SoulStone1986•

Color was certainly part of it. It was also the first year the boxster got the 718 redesign so there wasn't too many on the road back then.

As others have said, I made the purchase with my heart and my head gave me a slap a bit later. It was great fun though. Just steer clear of orange, yellow, viper green and Miami blue if you want to go under the radar lol

1

I was in the same situation as you a few months back. Ended up getting a 718 boxster.

I was actually very surprised with how much room the frunk has.

718 is a lot of fun to drive, but doesnt compare to a 911. They're 2 different cars.

Oh and forget about the MACAN. Playing it safe = 718 . Going all out = 911

1
ddlbbOP•

What makes you think forget about Macan? Serious question.

718 sounds like you’re happy !

2

dont get me wrong, MACAN is a great SUV.

But 718 or 911 is a lot more fun to drive, no?

1
ddlbbOP•

Yeah fully get that

1
RedditFauxGoldTaycan Turbo•

You need to drive them because you’re talking apples and oranges. I’ve had a macan as a loaner snd can say I’m not a fan. I daily my Taycan and don’t ever think twice about it.

1
ddlbbOP•

Do you get a lot of unwanted attention in such a car ? Serious question. While I don’t base my purchase on that , I’m more on the conservative side of flashy if that makes sense

1
RedditFauxGoldTaycan Turbo•

I like to have 'sleeper' cars myself so I get it. I didn't go with a crazy bright color but definitely brighter than black (Gentian Blue) and I do get some attention but really not bad. It's like people that appreciate cars really like it but the average person doesn't pay much attention. I'd say a GT3 would pull more eyes like a classic exotic like McLaren or Ferrari does.
