Horizons/East love song?

HORIZONS/EAST

A while back a I read a post somewhere where it was theorized that every Thrice album has one song on it that's just a straight up love song. As far as I can tell they would be:

First Impressions - Lockstep

Identity Crisis - In your Hands

Illusion of Safety - In Years to Come or Trust

Artist in the Ambulance - Silhouette

Vheissu - Atlantic

Fire/Water - The Whaler

Air/Earth - A Song for Milly Michaelson

Beggars - The Weight

Major/Minor - Anthology (it's lyrical references are primarily to the other songs on this list)

TbEitbN - Stay with Me

Palms - My Soul

Any predictions if the new album will continue this trend and with which track?

Mm would be promises, definitely not anthology

I dont think of the whaler as a “love song” although i guess it is a song about love

To me Promises seems like more of a critique of our society where promises in general and marriage vows in particular aren't taken as seriously, whereas Anthology seems to actually be addressed to the speaker's romantic partner, especially since Dustin has said most of the references are from songs about his wife.

You make a good point about The Whaler; I couldn't think of anything else from that album that would fit. Maybe Open Water I guess but I always thought that one was intended to be about God.

You're right. Anthology is the one. I never thought of it as a love song to anybody other than thrice fans but dk himself said it's about his wife lol

I do think it is safe to say that from Illusion of Safety onward, each album does include a straight up "love song", so to speak. Still, I'd think some of the songs listed above and others that deal with relationships maybe ought to be grouped somewhat differently. Also, I'm not sure there is one from each pair of TAI EP's or if there is only one love song out of that entire project.

In the liner notes to Major/Minor, Dustin explained that the six songs alluded to in "Anthology" were songs whose lyrics were written to his wife. These would be "Trust", "In Years to Come", "Silhouette", "Atlantic", "The Whaler", & "The Weight". So for sure those classify.

"In Your Hands" and "We Move Like Swing Sets" include lyrics written by Riley and Ed (respectively). The latter then inspired Dustin to write the lyrics to "Talking Through Glass" to further expand upon the themes Ed was communicating. While they are out relationships, I don't know if they are "love songs" so much as they are break-up songs.

"Lockstep" is probably about a platonic friendship, and "A Song for Milly Michaelson" is written from the perspective of a character in a movie, so I'm not sure it fits with some of the others in the same way. "Stay with Me" is sort of similar, but I think he was spinning off ideas from Josh Ritter's "The Temptation of Adam" into a sequel of sorts that would be more like those in "Anthology".

The new album probably will continue this trend, but who knows which track it'd be. Has anyone here read Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine? The book very well might give some insight into that song's lyrics.

Definitely going to happen. The big question for me is, what's going to be the next song where there's going to be a polyrhythm? I believe every album after IOS has at least one track that's got the drums in two different time signatures.
